How was this PORTFOLIO made
Let me share some insights about me, in regards to this portfolio project.
I am from Europe. I worked with my first company for 18 years, before I moved to the US. Selling myself is neither something I had to practice nor a cultural standard for me. My team and I work on exciting big projects, with AI or Machine Learning, genomics or Big Data or architectural domain with developers, scientists, and a bunch of extra smart people. I spend my life with them to make something awesome together. But projects, life, and recruiting different in the US. Recruiting relies on a portfolio artifact, so I make one. This portfolio is not any different from other design projects, so I approach it that way.
I have my target audience: you, dear reader. Most likely you are one of my kind, a team leader, product manager, C level manager, designer, who wants to work with me, or a recruiter, and you are here to learn about me. Welcome to this page.
As a design challenge, I would dig deeper to understand your why's and start with research about you. Luckily I was in your shoes many times, hired people, worked with you already, and faced your challenges. Yes, you have a big challenge ahead of you - to pick someone who makes your business successful. At least I know our potential personas:) It is a nice variety of people. UX, UI, IxD, many aspects of our field, and some of us crazy about the nice details, others the logic, others the colors, or precision, entertainment, structure, flow, mood... the list is big. The challenge at this point is not to believe I do this for myself, because it is not for me, but for you. Even if we may have a lot in common, we are all different. Age, expectations, drives are different, but the goals are common.
I need to know about the competition. It is huge. I worked and saw so many awesome designers and great managers. You, my reader needs to find the best, who talks to you the most. If it is not me then I wish you and them good luck. If you like what you see so far just go on and explore and feel free to email me or call any time. I am happy to talk.
Back to my design project, this portfolio. I started with you and with the market, I do a self-assessment before I start - what do I have, what do I need to do, what should I invest in, tools, timeline, delivery, expectations. This defines my requirements and I can prioritize those. I know that you may check this page on a mobile or a regular computer or a big screen. It should be responsive. My branding, my personality should be transparent as well as my methods. I quickly go through everything and face the regular design challenge: I already got a call from a client, who wants to see my portfolio. It is maybe you... This needs to be done fast. I made one 2 years ago when I had to find a new job with a visa - that was pressure, but I made it. This time I have my green card. I could slow down. I could build my own web service, my own database to gather clicks and learn about you and do google analytics, customize with my own GoDaddy domain, but I don't have time for that (update on this: as I built the first quick prototype of this page, it turned out it was horrible without a domain, so I bought one and then I added analytics as well). Big, complex projects excite me. This should only take me to the front door. You already saw my resume or my LinkedIn profile or heard about me from one of our shared connections. The real test is in your environment, with your people, with your team. So I have decided I take a lean approach. I made something fast, which looks great and gives you some insight, but the real proof of the pudding is in the eating. I used a free solution, pointing to my own work examples, and hoping that it was enough for the next steps (updates - to get rid of the ads and be able to use my own domain I pay for it now). Either way - please reach out to me, and let me know what you think. Thanks
Levi
